Sunday School

"Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs."
Luke 18:16

"The fourth 'R' in Your Child's Education"

St. Paul's Christian Education bases its lessons and activities on the Episcopal Church Calendar. The Old and New Testament lessons read in church each Sunday will also be read to your school-age children in conjunction with age-appropriate activities and discussions.

Lectionary-based Christian Education can unify a family around Sunday's scripture. Conversations about faith can spring up naturally around the dinner table, in your car or 'wherever two or more are gathered.'

Through Bible Readings, songs, games and craft projects, we celebrate the fundamentals of our Episcopal Faith, our salvation through Our Lord Jesus Christ, and how we worship and conduct our lives.

Our children and youth are very involved in outreach. Once a month during Sunday School the children, youth, and adult volunteers prepare a hot lunch for the homeless guests at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Elizabeth, NJ. Our older youth with adult supervision serve the hot lunch. Our children also are involved in food drives, making cards for our troops and giving their money to the Mercy Center in Bangkok, Thailand.

Curriculum Overview

For the Younger Ones

Nursery Care - Under 2 years old: babysitting in our nursery.

Two, Three & Four Year Olds - We follow the Episcopalian based Let the Children Play program which allows the children to play, make arts and crafts, and learn about important Bible Stories for the Old and New Testament. The preschool children have their own chapel service in the Children's chapel during Sunday School.

Kindergarten through 5th Grade
"Living the Good News"

This lectionary-based program covers the major areas of the Episcopal tradition.  Bible readings coincide with those lessons heard by parents in church each week.

Sunday School Schedule

Sunday School classes begin at 9:45am. Please leave your child at his/her classroom. Preschool children remain in their classroom throughout the service. Kindergarten children through 5th grade join their families in Church to celebrate the Eucharist together.

If you want to celebrate communion with your preschool-age child, please inform their teacher that you will be picking them up for communion. It helps to prepare your child ahead of time so he/she can better manage the transition out of the classroom and into the church.

Sunday School is held every Sunday except for the Sundays of Labor Day, Memorial Day and 4th of July weekend and Easter.

Middle School and High School
Our youth are involved in many aspects of St. Paul's life. They are Acolytes, Choir and Flower Guild members, Lectors, Greeters and Ushers. They also may be Sunday school teachers or assistants and are involved in outreach programs.

Our Youth Program meets on most Sunday nights at St. Paul's in the Parish Hall for Christian education, fellowship and games. Journey to Adulthood (J2A) is an Episcopal based Christian Education program our youth follow. Meeting times are as follows:

5:00-6:30 pm Middle School Youth meet
6:30-7:00 pm Combined Dinner for Middle and High School Youth
7:00-8:30 pm High School Youth meet

One evening a month the youth go to an outside activity such as bowling, ice skating, a ball game or movie.

Part of the J2A program is going on a Mission Trip. Last summer the youth went to Calais, ME and plan to go to Rutland, VT during the summer of 2009. The youth are responsible for fund raising, and doing outreach projects before going on the trip.

Confirmation preparation is for High School Youth. The Confirmands will meet with Fr. Andrew Hamersley during Lent to prepare for their confirmation.

Vacation Bible Camp

Children three and older are welcome to join us at our annual VBC. We celebrate our faith with music, games, drama, craft activities, bible stories, and dinner. Please call the Christian Education office for more information.

"Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it."
Luke 18:16
